Project Summary
Designed to serve the growing senior population of San Diego’s Council District 4, the George L. Stevens Community Senior Center was designed to meet the physical and social community needs of seniors based on input collected at a series of community meetings. The contemporary masonry architecture captures the use of sunlight to accent the high clearstory rooms, especially in the lobby and in the multi-purpose and auditorium, which were configured along with the kitchen as the focal points of the facility.
The programming sessions also identified the library, quiet reflections room, personal care room, dance studio and gifts room (for sale of senior-created handcrafts) as other key components of the facility. The design of this building exceeds Title 24 energy requirements by 28% along with the use of many energy-saving design elements.
